«Are you living to clear sand, or clearing sand to live?»

Etter å ha mistet siste buss hjem til byen, får en lærer tilbringe natten i en fattig landsby. I bunnen av et dypt hull i sanden får han overnatte i huset til en enke. Han tenker å dra hjem dagen etter, men finner snart ut at landsbybeboerne har andre planer for ham. Sammen med enken må han hver dag spa sanden som hele tiden truer med å drukne både dem og huset.

De to forholder seg til sin tilværelse på vidt forskjellige måter. Der kvinnen har akseptert tilværelsen sin (hvem ville brydd seg om henne hvis det ikke var for sanden?), forsøker mannen stadig å rømme fra sin sisyfos-lignende tilværelse.

I Teshigaharas andre av fire samarbeid med Kōbō Abe (som skrev romanen filmen er basert på) og komponist Toru Takemitsu gjennomsyrer sanden alt. Den strømmer ned sanddynene, regner gjennom hullene i taket, klenger seg fast til både karakterenes og seernes hud.
