I 1977 etablerte vibrafonisten Mike Mainieri bandet som først ble kjent som ’Steps’ feat. Michael Brecker, Don Grolnick, Eddie Gomez og Steve Gadd. Det tok ikke lang tid før bandet hadde opparbeidet seg en stor fanskare, solgt debutalbumet til gull, og bandet tok etter hvert navnet STEPS AHEAD. I løpet av årenes løp har ulike musikere blitt skiftet ut og nye har kommet til. Trommeslager Steve Gadd ble erstattet av Weather Report-avhopper Peter Erskine, og den brasilianske pianisten Eliane Elias ble også en viktig del av besetningen. I en periode var også den norske saxofonisten Bendik Hofseth en del av bandet. Det skal også nevnes at dagens saxofonist i Steps Ahead, Donny McCaslin, hadde en svært sentral rolle på David Bowies (dessverre) siste utgivelse «Blackstar».
Steps Ahead manøvrerer elegant mellom egne komposisjoner, standardlåter, funky rytmer og virtuost spill – alltid med et lass av energi og spilleglede!
NB: Peter Erskine var opprinnelig med i denne turneen, men av helsemessige årsaker har han måttet trekke seg. Billy Kilson, som spilte med Steps Ahead på 90-tallet erstatter Erskine.

After a long wait the legendary jazz fusion band, Steps Ahead, is touring this summer and Kongsberg Jazzfestival is among the lucky ones to get a visit. In 1977 vibraphonist Mike Mainieri established the band, first known as ‘Steps’ feat. Michael Brecker, Don Grolnick, Eddie Gomez and Steve Gadd. Not long after their debut album was released it achieved gold status and the band eventually took the name ‘STEPS AHEAD’. Over the years various musicians have been replaced and new ones have emerged, among them former Weather Report drummer Peter Erskine and the Brazilian pianist Eliane Elias. The band elegantly maneuvers between their own compositions, standard tunes and funky rhythms – always with virtuosity, energy and enthusiasm!
