Vi åpner vår Sør-Koreanske temauke med denne neo-noir filmen. Den følger Dae-su og hvordan hans helt normale liv blir snudd på hodet. Uten å vite hvorfor eller av hvem blir han kidnappet og holdt fange i noe som ligner et slitt hotellrom. Når han uten forvarsel 15 år senere slippes løs er hevn målet. Men i sin voldelige jakt blir det tydelig at han fortsatt er vevd inn i et nett av konspirasjon.
Chan-wook var egentlig filosofistudent, men bestemte seg for å bli filmregissør når han så Alfred Hitchcocks Vertigo. Da Oldboy først kom ble den beskrevet som en ny pust til den tankeløse action som ellers preget Hollywood. Filmen er full av smarte, kreative vendinger og en svært uventet og ubehagelig plot twist. Den er brutal og hevndreven med mørkt og majestetisk lyd- og lysbruk. Ikke overraskende roste Tarantino den høyt og var med på å sørge for at filmen vant Grand Prix i filmfestivalen i Cannes.
