Rocky Balboa er en amerikansk-italiensk arbeiderklassemann som jobber som en inkassator for en lånehai i Philadelphias slum og bruker resten av tiden sin til boksing. Til tross for dette tvilsomme arbeidet er Rocky en mann med et godt hjerte og god moral. Man kan derfor ikke gjøre annet enn å heie på ham da han får sjansen til å vise hva han duger for når verdensmesteren i boksing som et pr-stunt utfordrer ham til kamp.
Filmens seks oppfølgere kan bekrefte dens suksess. Den ble en umiddelbar klassiker og temasangen er fortsatt hyppig brukt i ymse treningsmontager. Men hvorfor er en film om boksing så herlig å se på? Svaret på dette er kanskje den klassiske tematikken om menneskeskjebner alle kan identifisere seg med. Den viser en underdog som kjemper seg opp fra rags to riches: et bilde på den sanne amerikanske drømmen. At filmen har 40-årsjubileum i år er derfor noe vi må feire.
