Raging Bull er fortellingen om den emosjonelt ustabile bokseren Jake LaMotta som bruker boksing som allegori for sitt følelsesliv. Denne vinklingen er ikke så vanskelig å finne, men Scorsese i samarbeid med De Niro gjør filmen til noe helt spesielt. Filmen følger Jake LaMotta spilt av De Niro gjennom hans opp- og nedturer som proffbokser. Oppturene hvor han vinner mestertittelen, men også nedturene når ting falmer og Jake LaMotta tar oppdrag for nattklubber. Dette er bare den ytre rammen i Raging Bull.
Det som virkelig portretteres er Jake LaMottas sjalusi og usikkerhet i forhold til kvinner og hans manglende evne til å håndtere følelser. Boksekampene blir Jake LaMottas måte å fortelle kona hva han føler gjennom vold. I det ene tilfellet lager Jake LaMotta hakkemat av en bokser kona omtalte som pen, og i et annet tilfellet lar han seg bli banket opp på grunn av private handlinger. De Niro formidler arbeiderklasserollen ypperlig med ulmende følelser bak et alvorlig blikk.
