Vi åpner vår polske temauke med Polanskis berømte debutfilm som også regnes som en av hans beste. Når et ektepar halvt som en spøk inviterer en haiker med på seiltur blir resultatet en psykologisk thriller med dialog som stikker. Selv om filmens narrativ er enkelt har handlingen en konstant nerve som bygger seg opp med en voldsom intensitet. Dette oppnås mer på grunn av filmens knappe ressurser enn til tross for dem. At det meste av handlingen foregår på en seilbåt gir en nesten klaustrofobisk nærhet til filmens eneste tre skuespillere og deres rivende karakterutvikling. Kameraet fanger nådeløst opp menneskelig ydmykelse, frykt, seksuelle spenning og aggresjon mens de to mennene starter psykologisk krigføring om kvinnens oppmerksomhet.
