I Duncan Jones´ spillefilmdebut møter vi astronauten Sam Bell som på slutten av sine tre år på månen opplever en personlig krise. Som den eneste arbeideren på månen føler Sam på ensomheten og savnet etter familien sin, noe som får ham til å hallusinere. Dette gjør at Sam tviler på seg selv og det han ser da han oppdager hva som foregår på romstasjonen. Sams eneste selskap er roboten GERTY, som til tross for at han alltid sier »I´m here to keep you safe, Sam», vekker en uhyggelig følelse hos Sam.
GERTY skaper en type kald trygghet, som alltid passer på, men det er vanskelig å stole helt på denne kunstige intelligensen. Det hvite og sterile miljøet, sammen med GERTYs følelsesløse stemme, som forsterker den allerede etablerte ensomheten, føles som en komprimert versjon av det beste fra 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Sam Bell is an astronaut maintaining operations on the Moon. After being alone on the moon for three years, he starts hallucinating. Sam begins to doubt himself, and wants answers to what is going on at the lunar station.
