Dette er en av de to filmene til den italienske mesterregissøren Pier Paolo Pasolini vi viser på Cinema Neuf denne høsten. Denne filmen tar utgangspunkt i Matteusevangeliet, men er ingen ordinær bibelsk film. Filmen provoserte samtiden voldsomt, særlig det konservativt katolske Italia. For Pasolini var Jesus et revolusjonært menneske som kritiserte de satte normene, men det ble vanskelig kost for de som synes han brukte materialet til å kritisere religion. Samtidig er filmen en reaksjon på marxismens konformitet. Pasolini, som selv var kommunist, men synes marxismen ikke tok høyde for livets og dødens mysterier.
Pasolini trodde ikke på at Jesus var Guds sønn, men skal ha ment at “menneskeligheten i ham hadde antatt en så høy, streng og ideal form, at den nådde ut over de sedvanlige begreper om menneskeligheten.” For både kristne og ateister er dette en sterk og interessant film som burde skape en del gode diskusjoner i etterkant.
