Ettersom det er Halloween byr Cinema Neuf på godteri under visningen av denne kultfilmen innen horror. En forfatter og hans familie skal passe på et vinterstengt høyfjellshotell. I fullstendig isolasjon håper han å få ro til å skrive, men blir istedenfor gradvis mer påvirket av bygningens ondskap.
Som regissør er Kubrick beskrevet som en krevende og detaljoppmerksom perfeksjonist. Han var innovativ og mange av hans filmer endte opp med å fornye kinematografi. I The Shining ble han den første til å utnytte steadicams fulle potensial med lange jevne sporingsopptak som flyter gjennom hotellet. Musikken kan minne om kunstmusikken i 2001: A Space Odyssey da den er stilistisk-modernistisk og nøye synkronisert med filmens takt og tempo. Ikke et filmatisk virkemiddel gikk Kubrick uutnyttet hen for å skape en gjennomgripende uhyggelig stemning og få hotellet til å virke trangt og klaustrofobisk til tross for dets enorme størrelse.
