I denne eksperimentelle, maniske og svarte komedien virker det som Burton har kastet sammen alle elementene han elsket, heldigvis lyktes han.
Burton startet karrieren som en animator for Disney, men stilen hans var for mørk for det unge publikumet. I denne filmen fikk Burton mer frihet og hans kunstneriske stil kommer tydelig frem. Noen av detaljene i denne filmen er videre utviklet i Burtons senere filmer, som Corpse Bride og Nightmare Before Christmas. Dette er en av de mange filmene der Tim Burton samarbeider med komponisten Danny Elfman.
Det lykkelige unge ekteparet Adam (Alec Baldwin) og Barbara (Geena Davis) dør i en bilulykke. De finner ut at de kan fortsette å bo i det idylliske huset sitt som spøkelser. Idyllen blir forstyrret da en ny familie flytter inn i huset. De leier inn et profesjonelt spøkelse, som har mye mer erfaring i å skremme folk og er generelt en veldig interessant type. I denne mørke komedien møter du Michael Keaton i rollen som den frekke og skumle bio-eksorsisten, Beetlejuice.

Adam and Barbara die in a car crash. As ghost they continue to live in their own house. Their peaceful existence is interrupted when a new family moves in. Adam and Barbara are not spooky enough to get rid of the living on their own, so they seek professional help. You say his name three times, and Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) is there to scare the humans away. Is it really that simple, though?
