For det norske folk er Hans-Wilhelm Steinfeld kjent som en tøff og pågående utenriksreporter, med sin markante bergensdialekt som varemerke. Steinfeld har hatt en ekstraordinær karrière som en av NRKs mest fremtredende utenrikskorrespondenter, og har gjennom mange år formidlet vår tids fremste verdenshistoriske begivenheter i Øst med Norge som publikum. For sin innsats er Steinfeld tildelt Skandinaviska Journalistpriset, Narvesenprisen, Cappelen-prisen, Peer Gynt-prisen og æres-prisen fra Litauens Journalistforbund. Han er også blitt tildelt Litauens frihetsmedalje «Den 13. januar-medaljen».
